The short answer
Under-seat space looks simple but often contains moving rails, wiring, ducts, vents, and seat-belt hardware. Measure the smallest clearance, not the widest empty gap. A box that fits with the seat forward may interfere when the seat slides back, reclines, folds, or carries a passenger.
Record the usable space
| Measurement | Check with | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Seat in each normal position | Rail covers and ducts can reduce clearance. |
| Width | Between trim and hardware | The opening may taper. |
| Depth | From the seat base to the footwell boundary | A box can block feet or rear access. |
| Movement | Slide, fold, and recline | Storage must not become a pinch point. |
| Contents | Weight, edges, liquids, and heat | Hard or loose items can create new hazards. |
Use cardboard or a soft measuring aid before buying a rigid box. Never push an object against a connector or run a strap around a moving seat mechanism. Keep first-aid, emergency, or child-related items accessible rather than buried under the seat.
Inspect after installation
Move the seat slowly through its permitted range, check that vents and foot space remain clear, and listen for rubbing. If the vehicle shows a warning light or a seat stops moving, remove the storage item and obtain advice rather than forcing the mechanism.
Limits
This guide does not authorize seat removal or wiring changes. The vehicle owner manual and a qualified technician control unusual fitment questions.
